I believe that the term "artisanal" should refer to the method of production, and these methods (small batches made primarily by hand using traditional methods that celebrates the art of the production) are found all over the world. Our ethnocentrism shows when we attribute the term "artisan" to European or American methods. What a sadly limiting view of the culinary art.

Comment on Will President Bush sign the 2007 Farm Bill? I love bread, wine and cheese! Artisan bread is beautifully crusty, textured and wholesome bread that is splendid all alone, but even better when accompanied by some wonderful cheese, and wine, of course.

Comment on Artisan bread, cheese and wine - about lots more than great flavor

Great introduction to the site!
